FREIGHT CHARGES.
REFRIGERATED CARGOES.
CONTRACTS EXPIRE SHORTLY.
(From Onr Correapon lert.)
WELLINGTON, Wednesday.
Contracts for the overseas transport of refrigerated cargoes of dairy produce, meat and fruit expire on August 31. It is not known whether new contracts have yet been signed, signed.
The contracts were discussed in New Zealand between representatives and overseas shipowners, but no decision was reached. The discussions were to have been resumed in London during the recent visit of the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash.
It is understood that freight and other charges on exports at present represent an annual levy on production of £6.000,000 yearly. Even a fractional increase in the rate, therefore, can seriously affect the balances accruing from the sale of New Zealand produce •verieu.
