GIRL GAVE HIM UP

Told by the girl with whom he had hem keeping company that she was

to ■•finish'' with him and did not wish to see him any more, Gordon Edwin Spurr, aged 22. a laundry worker, was found dead in his bedroom about three hours later. On the bed beside him was a .22 calibre rifle. At an inquest concluded this morning by the coroner. Mr. F. K. Hunt, the father of the deceased said be resided at 41, Mclvern Road, Morningside. About 4.30 on the morning of Sunday, February 20. witness was awakened by hearing heavy groaning and on going to his son's room found him lying on his back on the bed and a rifle beside him. Deceased was dressed in shirt and trousers and there was a wound in the chest. Witness immediately sent for Dr. Lindsay, who. upon arrival, found life to be extinct. Deceased had had no financial worries and had never expressed intention of taking his life. A girl of 17 years said she had been keeping company with deceased about two and a half years. On the night previous to his death he and she had attended a dance, leaving for home about midnight. On arriving at her home they stood talking at the gate till 1.30 a.m. when she told him she was going to finish with him and did not wish to see him any more. "He said T was killing him and if T wanted to hurt him why didn't I k{ll him instead," said witness. "I kissed him ■rood-bye and his final words to me were: 'You will never see me again; I will never come back.' " Witness said deceased made no mention of shooting himself and she did not think he would take such drastic action. The reason she gave him up was because he was of a very jealous nature. The coroner returned a verdict of suicide by shooting.
