"SHOCKING," SAYS S.M.

COUPLE IN ONE ROOM.

PAY £1 RENT: NO FIRE.

During the hearing of a maintenance case which came before him in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Mr. W. R. McKean. S.M., was informed by counsel appearing for a wife who was claiming an increase of maintenance from her husband that her rent for a five-roomed house was £1 5/ per week.

"H'm. That's a little better than a case I have just had before me, where a poor old couple—both pensioners—were living in one room for which they paid £ 1 per week rent —a room without a fireplace, and no conveniences at all. That's a shocking state of affairs, I think.''
