PROHIBITION SEQUEL.
Police Fire On Moslem-Hindu
Rioters.
EXTRA TAXES LEVIED
(Received 10.30 a.m.)
BOMBAY, August 1
A crowd of Moslems, protesting against the property tax imposed to meet the deficit arising from prohibition, became disorderly and stoned Hindu onlookers. Police opened fire, wounding 15.
The "Daily Mail" Bombay correspondent says that the riots resulted in injury to 56, including 27 police. Curfew has been installed for a fortnight.
Prohibition celebrations included a demonstration by 100,000 Moslems and Hindus singing funeral hymns of "Demon Drink," a figure representing which was burned by school children. A mass meeting congratulated the Government on carrying prohibition.
Police, with fixed bayonets, are watching strategic points, with orders to fire on rioters.
