TRAPPED IN LIFT.
FIRE BREAKS OUT. HOUSEMAIDS' FRIGHT. INCIDENT IN HOTEL. Suspended iu ;i lift between tho fourth and fifth floor* of a city hotel, about 11).-JO this morning, three housemaids in Hotel A uck la ml had fears that they were going to lio 'bunted to death. They were using tho i-talT lift when tire broke out. the lift, stopping between the two (loots. There uas a hissing noitsc and s.moke issued out. One girl fainted, but the two others screamed for help, bringing members of the stall to their n<ssit*taiice. The lift, jratcs were opened and the girls were assisted out to the landing on the fifth floor. A call was sent to the Central Fire Station, and soon an engine arrived. However, by this time the tire had been suppressed. The reason for the outbreak was a snort.-circuit in the electrical wiring, but little damage was done other than the stopping of the working of the dynamo which jammed the lift and gaVo the occupant* a bad scare. The Rirls did not suffer other than from shock, and all returned to work. They said that two of them climbed the lift door in order to call for help. Fortunately it was not many minutes before help arrived and they were released.
