Py Korry — The Lyddite It was the year 1900 and the Boer War was on, and of course everyone was interested in the progress of events. I had been away from my home town ior some time, but my brother was still there. On my return I saw an old acquaintance, Toruiti, a Maori, reading a newspaper to a very attentive audience of his own people and explaining events as they puzzled them. Not wishing to pass an old friend, I waited until he looked up. Recognising me, he jumped up and said: "Py korry, Hake, I never see you for this long time 12 months before. But I know your brother werry easy, one hand." Alter the usual inquiries about friends, work and the usual doings, I asked what he thought of the war" and the big guns that were being used. Tomiti replied: "By korry, the Lyddite the fellow for the Poer. The time he come you hear the smell you dead." 12/—.
