MATCHES IN MINE.
YOUNG MAN'S OFFENCE. (By Telegraph—rrcs.« Association.) OREYMOUTII, Friday. Tn the Magistrate's Court Valentine Harvey was fined £2 10/ for having matches in his possession in the Dobson mine on July 21. The defendant said he was not aware the matches were in his pocket. Counsel for the prosecution said miners had been warned of the danger of carrying matches, owing to gas in the mine. Previous prosecutions apparently had had no effect. A substantial penalty was requested. Mr. R. E. Ferner, S.M., said it should be unnecessary to impress on miners the necessity of ensuring their own safety. He took into consideration that the defendant was young and had been employed in the mine only three weeks. As a result of the dismissal of Harvey by the manager last Friday the miners refused to work. Negotiations were deferred pending the result of the Court proceedings.
