DEATH OF TWO FAMOUS SPORTSMEN.
HAYWARD AND WAGSTAFF. TEST CRICKETER AND ENGLISH LEAGUE CAPTAIN. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON", July 19. The death is reported of two men famous in international sport: Tom Hayward, the Surrey cricketer, and Harold Wagstaff, twice captain of English Hugby League teams in Australia. Hayward. who was J. B. Hobbe' original opening partner for Surrey, compiled 43.518 runs in first-class cricket between 1893 and 1914. His average was 41.80. In Tests against Australia Hayward's figures were: 29 matches, 51 innings, twice not out, 1747 runs, average 35.65. His two centuries were both hit in 1906, at Old Trafford (130) and the Oval (137).
Wagstaff (Hudderefield) played in Auckland in 1914 and 1920. In the earlier [Tear' the Englishmen won all six games, but after the war lost the opening match against Auckland 16—24, an<l won the nine other games played.
