WATERFRONT COSTS.
ROYAL COMMISSION SOUGHT. FARMERS' CONFERENCE VIEWS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A remit urging that a Royal Commission should be appointed to investigate the unsatisfactory position in regard to shipping facilities for export, with particular attention to t'.ie incidence of handling costs at New Zca'and ports, was passed at the New Zealand Farmers' Union conference. It was decided to urge also that farmer* should have dimt representation on all inquiries into waterfront ditp'itcs, specially in regard to the fixing of wage*. Another remit stressed the need to encourage young farmers to settle on the land. A second remit, which was not adopted, suggested that suitable European immigrants should be encouraged to settle on the land. On the subject of defence the resolution of the conference was that it appreciated the Government's efforts <n regard to defence, but strongly urged the introduced of universal military training.
