"DID NOT RETIRE."
MR. LUNN OUTSPOKEN. REPLACED ON FIRE BOARD. APPOINTMENT OF 10NIONIST. "There has been a general impression in the city that I retired from the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, on which I have been the Government representative for the last 10 years. I want to give that an emphatic denial. My retirement has come about because the Government did not renew my term of office." This statement was made by Mr. A. G. Lunn at to-day's meeting of the Aiickland Chamber of Commerce, when reference was made to his retirement by the president of the chamber, Mr. A. Ely. Mr. Lunn said he was not one of the retiring sort when he thought he was assisting civic progress and advancing the interests of the citizens —especially in view of the fact that thp Fire Board had a big job in front of it in connection with the new building. He had <crvcd the board faithfully and to the he*t of his ability. When the present Government 'In ad come to power his term of office had been extended. Recently, however, he had been replaced by the new Government nominee, Mr. H. W. Mayo. ''I am sure that Mr. Mayo will serve the board well." said Mr. Lunn. "As secretary of the Fire Brigades' Union he has always been attentive to the wages and conditions of the men. and if he takes that.eiithusiarffrt into his new position he will do good work."
Mr. Limn added that be wished to correct the general impression that he had retired. Tt was only fair to let the public know the true position—that the Government had replaced him by a nominee more acceptable to them.
