WORK ON FARMS.
SUBSIDY PLAN POPULAR. FLOOD OF APPLICATIONS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. Hundreds of applications have been lodged by farmers in the Gisborne and Wairoa districts for subsidies under the 4B farm work scheme, involving scrub nutting, fencing and draining, and the Gisborne Social Security registrar expect* that all flt unemployed w.ill shortly be absorbed in this and Scheme 13 work.
Single men will be offered work in the country, while married men with homes in Gfoborne will be absorbed in "town farm" work. The scheme is being handled by the Lande Department, and the commissioner, Mr. H. L. Primrose, stated to-day that «o many applications had been received that it had been necessary to appoint an additional inspector for the Wairoa end of the district to relieve the work on the present officer, Mr. R. C. Tuke, of Wairoa. • The position, he said, had been filled by Mr. F. Harrison. It wu hoped that a number of additional men would be abiorbed by the Gisborne Borough Council under Xn, 13 scheme. Applications had been made to the council for 46 men for lieiiirtifioation and genera! improvements in borough reserves. In addition to European unemployed, he added, Maori labour wae being absorbed on the East Comet properties.
