Bauxite lias the appearance of clay. but is much harder, and its colour ranges from grey to brown and even red and pink. Rocklike in substance, it us quarried, tlie precise method* used varying with the nature of the deposits. 11l the reduction of this clay to aluminium, great beat—about 1000 degrees Centigrade—is required, and ample electrical energy must be available; consequently the availability of cheap electric power is often the deciding factor in the location of a plant.
Pure aluminium lias a specific gravity of 2.7. compared with 7.S for mild steel It is also ii far better conductor of heat, which gives it a decided advantage for such parts as cylinder heads, piston-., crankcases. etc. It is easily iriachiii"d. Copper is the metal most generally used for alloying, about 4 per cent a typical proportion.
It will surprise most motorist* t<> learn that the proportion of bauxite in the earth's makf-up to a depth of 10 miles is computed to nmourit to SI.II per cent, compared with 19.0 per cent iron.
WEAR ON CAR.
VALUE OF GOOD OIL. The longest street in the world for the engine of your car is that street which you enter from your garage door. This is where, particularly on cold mornings, most engine-wear occurs. Driving down that street citn cause more wear than if you drove continuously for 1000 mile*. Use of the correct bodied oil will reduce thia starting wear to a minimum. That is why car manufacturers and oil companies recommend the use of special light bodied winter oil for cold weather driving. Light bodied oil gives easier starting and quicker distribution of oil to every working surface in the engine. and therefore less wear during cold start*. Ally oil sufficiently light in body will do this, but there is another essential. The oil must retain its body at the full operating temperature of the engine. In other words, it must be fluid when cold and still have sufficient body when hot to give correct engine lubrication. Only the highest quality lubricating oils possess this "double range" property.
