A PROSPECTIVE 'CHASER. Padishah has been discussed a good deal lately as a horse that might play a loading part in important steeplechases this winter. He made a poor showing at Huntings in the Hawke's Bay Steeples, but may be all the better for the experience. Ho was nominuted recently for the Australian Hurdles and Steeplechase, to be decided at CnulHeld in August, clashing with the Grand National meeting at Riccarton, where Padishah also claims engagement* in the principal events. TO RACE AT RICCARTON. Charade, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles, is not partial to soft ground, and for that reason she will not race at Trentham. She is in strong work, however, and is booked for a trip to Riccarton for the Grand National Hurdles. BROTHER TO CHIEF COOK. Cherry Picker, winner of the Takapau Novice Stakes at the Dannevirke meeting last Saturday, is a four-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler from Cherry Pie. He is owned by Mr. F. Armstrong, for whom he is trained by A. C. Plummer. Cherry Picker is a full brother to Chief Cook, a proved galloper a few seasons ago, and more is likely to be heard of him. He is engaged in minor events at Trentham this week. WON AT DUNEDIN. King Gustavo, who is down to contest the Trial Plate and Novice Handicap on the latter days of the Wellington meeting is a two-year-old colt by Gustavo from Cull Bird. At his last start King Gustavo beat a useful field over six furlongs at the Dunedin meeting, and his prospects of earning some money at Trentham look bright.
SHOWS ABILITY. It is some tim* since Melvanui won a race, but he is in tip-top condition and mav make amends early in the new season. This gelding has been schooled over hurdles recently, and judged by his ability he promise* to make good as a jumper. A PROVED GALLOPER. Although Royal Appellant has no immediate engagements, he is getting through plenty of useful work and looks remarkahly well. The son of Appellant is nominated for the Winter Cup to be decided at Riccarton in August, but at present nothing definite is known as to whether he will take on the Southern trip. At his best Royal Appellant is one of our most capable gallopers up to a mile and a quarter, and he should not be hard to place at approaching meetings. IN MINOR EVENTS. Areas, who is entered for minor events at. TiMntham this week, was a winner at, his last start, beating a big field over six furlongs at Hastings last month. This son of Hunting Song and was sold for a big figure at the yearling sales hint, season, and is expected to develop into a galloper above the average. REBUMEO WORK. The Buzzer, winner of the Auckland Cup of 1037, is again in work under L. Or. Morris at Awupuni after a spell of several months .n the King Country. Ecnlatii'. in the s,line stable, has also been lecominiswinneil. HAD A GOOD SEASON. With Hn,v Hun an I Sky runs Nine mainst,i>s of his team, the Riccarton trainer M. C'on/,11 has already won 22 races thin season, most of them on the West Coast. Skyrma (8), Roy Bun 1.51, Pol Roger (3), Rebel Rank (2). Philibun i2l and Contract (1) were winners I'nun the stable, and between them they were placed on .53 occasions for a total of £1040 10/ in stakes.
