ROAD SAFETY.

NOVEL TEACHING SCHEME.

SCHOOL HAS ITS OWN COURT,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAWKRA, Wednesday. A scheme to inculcate into the minds of pupils the necessity of care when using streets has been introduced into the Waiiganui Intermediate School by the principal, Mr. W. E. Fossette. The scheme, which is similar to that now operating in Carterton, was put into operation yesterday in co-operation with the chief "traffic inspector, Mr. H. E. Tipper. Bicvclps were first inspected and then each pupil had to ride over a temporary pedestrian crossing being used by other pupil*, give the correct signals, or stop, as the necessity arose, and generally observe the rule's of the road. Having successfully passed the test pupils were given a license to ride bv the headmaster, which also carried with it a certificate of fitness for the bicycle. The school has its own, traffic control*, whose duty it is to report pupils who <■0111 in it breaches of by -laws. These are dealt with by a specially-constituted court of school pupiU and penalties are imposed, «uch as endorsing or suspendin"- an offender's license. The instruction in road safety is made aa attractive as possible, combined with a certain amount of humorous element, the fundamental principle of road safety being predominant.
