Shortly after the '■ntlireak of the (ireal War in MM 4 lie joined the New Zealand Kxpeditionarv Forces and returned four years later with the rank of captain. On resuming duty with the Dcpa 11 inent in l!)l!t Mr. took up a position at (Jreymouth, hut a year later he was appointed to the position of inspector. In J 031 ho was advanced to the ]w>sition of senior inspector and after serving three vcars in this capacity was appointed deputychief inspector. One of Mr. Young's tirut duties on to Wellington was that of Departmental representative on the tour of New Zealand by the Duke of (iloueester in l».t4He was appointed second deputy-Director■•(ieneral early j*i ]',):!7 and deputy-Direct or-(.ieneral last November. .Joining the Department in Dunedin in 1!H)1. Mr. Newall suliseijueiitlv became a telegraphist, Weill? stationed at Ralcluthu, Napier. Wellington and Hastings. In l!)l."i he was appointed chief clerk to the telegraph engineer at Napier, and ill 1010 lie was transferred to the (ieneral Post Otlice. Wellington, where for II years he wa» attache<l to the staff of the chief engineer. When the commercial branch of the Department war. established in J!»:}(> .Mr. Newall was appointed commercial manager, occupying this |K)*ition until 19.'14. when he Was appointed principal of the telegraph division. He was appointed second deputy-Director-t ieneral on Mr. Young's promotion.
