TRENTHAM RACES.
WAIKATO CANDIDATES.
A STRONG TEAM.
LATEsI TRACK WORK.
(By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.")
HAMILTOX, this day
The going on the Xo. 1 grass track was heavy and cutting out at Te Rapa this morning, when a number of candidates with engagements at Trentham next week were galloped. Several interesting trials were recorded, the best of the morning being a five-furlong essay by Whirling and Koyal Bachelor. -Most of the horses are leaving to-morrow by float for Wellington. Maori Song and l'lince Acre were allotted useful work, and both are in good fettle for Trentham. Maori Song has come through his recent racing in great heart, and it will not be on the score of condition if he fails to show to advantage in the south. According to present intentions he is to have the services of J \v inder next week. Prince Acre has already demonstrated his partiality for the J rentham course and as he is bearing a healthy appearance he may extend his account on the present trip. Ellaiiui (O. Mclnallyj and Inness Lad vO. Lj. Goulsbro) were associated over a round, t'llanui. whose rider lost an iron over the concluding stages, had a slight advantage over his companion at the end. He is to contest the Trentham Hurdles on Tuesday, and his promotion to open company should not prove a bar to further success. He looks all the better for the racing he had at the Great Northern meeting. The beet effort over a sprint distance was that of Whirling (McKenzie) and Koyal Bachelor (Goulsbro), the former having the measure of his companion over the deciding stages in I.s*£. The final*half mile was traversed in ;>2 2-ss. Both these members of A. J. Julian's string are partial to winter conditions and should pay expenses on the Trentham trip. They leave to-night for in company with KQllicker. Girdle (Maria), Awhiowhio j McJnalJy) and Car (Goulsbro) were in that order at the end of six furlongs in 1.22. the last half mile in 565. All are entered for Wellington.
Kollicker (McKenzie) and Dn Maurier (Long) were under a firm hold over the deciding stages of five furlongs in 1.5 1-5. Both were travelling well within themselves throughout, and impressed by the quality o£ their work. Du Maurier, who indicated a return to form by his forward showing at Te Awamutu. worked in improved style and may make amends next week for recent disappointments. Young Paddon, who is suffering from a slight cold, will not be making the trip to Trentham. N. R. McKenzie will be riding Hutana at Trentham and will be 011 hand at the Dannevirke meeting 011 Saturday. J. F. Tutc-hen's pair Ellanui and Awliiowhio will have the services of O. Mclnally in their Trentham engagements. De Friend, who was returned to his owner at Gisborne after the recent Bay of Plenty meeting, is to contest jumping events at. the Wellington meeting, and though this will mark his debut in hurdle company he is reputed to be a bold jumper in private. His place in J. Muir's stable has been filled by Prince Colossus, who may be given a course of schooling.
