A Chungking message ways that 18 Japanese warships are reported to be concentrated off Fooehow, but the reported landing of infantrv is not confirmed. British and American authorities have warned the Japanese that they will be responsible for interference with and endangering of the lives and property and ships of their nationals at Fooehow and Wenchow. The United States destroyer Ashen ille joined H.M.S. J)ucliess at Fooehow. According to curlier messages, however, Japanese forces landed this morning at Fooehow. a treaty port 34 miles from the mouth of the Min River, and about halfway between Hongkong and Shanghai.
The Japanese naval authorities at Shanghai announced that operations would also commence to-day against Wenchow, another treaty port* l"i 0 miles north of Koocbow. They warned foreign shipping to quit both ports. The British Consul-Cieneral at Shanghai rejected a Japanese Note demanding the withdrawal of foreign shipping and nationals from Wenchow ami Foochow by noon on Thursday, local The Note says the harbours will be blocked by means of bombs and both will Ik , zones of hostilities. The loss of these ports will place almost the entire Chinese coast in the hands of the Japanese, seriously affecting Chinese exports. Chinese report that their counterattack at Yuanchu, which the Japanese j occupied, resulted in r>ooo Japanese casualties followed bv their retreat.

COURT CASE REVELATION. Independent Cable Service. LONDON, June 27. In the Hongkong Supreme Court yesterday a local firm. Maurice Angsborg and Company, appealed against a decision favouring the Chinese (iovernment which claimed that 10.000 (iermaii gas masks recently delivered were not up to standard. Witnesses revealed that, in one consignment handled from Auusboig and Company. HOtM) Krupps Mill shells valued at £42,400 reached China from Hamburg. The correspondent of the "Daily Express" at Hongkong points out that, while (iermany is urging Japan to enter the Axis military alliance, her arms shipments to China are increasing. He says considerable quantities of (Serman war materials are still stored in Hongkong awaiting consignment. He is informed by Chinese sources that Hamburg is supplying more than half the shells, cartridges, revolvers, artillery, mortars and whippet tanks to China.
