DUTCH ODDITIES
Holland is one of tho oddest arid nio«t charming countries in the world. Xhoug.n water is everywhere, there is often not a drop to drink, and people have to binit by the pailful, as they often buy somefiiinjr to boil their kettle?. From the hij»h dykes frojrs can look down on the birds, jind in the damp fields the cows wear coats. Water vehicles ply for fares on the canals, and coal and pe.it are brought by brown-sailed boats. which are hitched up to the door like a horse.
The peasants used to wear beautiful gold ornaments and costly lace on their heads, and often a shabby French bonnet also. Dops draw little carta with brass jars full of milk. The brass and copper shine like {jold, and everything that can be scrubbed is scrubbed «t least once a week, even the mil way stations!
