GLORY OF BULB FIELDS.
CHARM OF NETHERLANDS
THE HAGUE. The whole region hetween Leyden, one of the most fascinating old Dutch towns, where Rembrandt was born, and Alkmaar, the main cheese market of the Xetherlands. is one sheet of colour, thinks to the glory of the bulbfields, which are now in full bloom.
Although, generally speaking, Holland may be called a garden country, in spring time the flowery pride of the bulbfields is a special feature and one of the greatest charms of the Netherlands. Haarlem, well-known for its Frans Hals Museum and the great cathedral with its world-famous organ, is one of the main centres of bulb-growing; it may be called a Mecca for flower-lovers, and is an excellent starting point for interesting tours to the various bulbland villages, Bennebroek, Hillegom, Lisse. Sassenheim, Warmond and Noordwyk. Everywhere in these regions there is an abundance of the finest fields, with narcissi, daffodils, tulips and hyacinths, a wonderful display of all these flovers in the most brilliant and varied colouring of their blooms. About 2000 varieties of tulip are cultivated, and Holland devotes about 20.000 acres of her land to the production of bulbs.
