THE BY-ELECTION.
It is no use Mr. Pickering trying to explain away the figures of the Christcburch South by-election. They are plainly the writing on the wall. One has only to ask the business |k>o|.]c. and again you get it. Business men will tell you that although they themselves for hu<ine<s reasons will not express their opinion*, they are almost unanimous that there is a big swing against the (iovernment. So serious is the position with regard to import restrictions that drastic and organised action will be absolutely necessary. Th-is serious state of affairs has l»oen brought aliout through a policy of reckless expenditure 011 Public Works and 110 land settlement policy.
