HOURS OF WORK.
TEMPORARY increase.
WILL MEET PUBLIC DEMAND.
(By Talagraph.—Press Association.) | DUNEDIN, Wednesday. "It is nearly three weeks since I made the suggestion that the Government should consider slightly increasing hours as a temporary measure in industries where the public demand could not be satisfied by the retention of the 40-hour week," said the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Adam Hamilton- to-day. "I mentioned the building industry as an example in which my suggestion was worthy of consideration, since community hardship is acutc, because housing demands so greatly exceed the "I'PP'y." Mr. Hamilton continued. "At the time the Government did not concede any virtue in the suggestion, but I notice that this month the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, indicates that he agrees with the principle underlying my appeal. Mr. Webb said: 'There might come • time when the Government might ask workers to work longer hours to produce the things «re need. T would be the first to come out in support of such a proposal.'
