"PRICE WILL RISE."

WATER ON NORTH SHORE.

That the price of water on the North ) Shore would go up was the opinion expressed by Mr. F. C'arr at a meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council last night, discussing what attitude the council's delegates should take at the North Shore water supply conference. Mr. Carr said that in his opinion the Wairau scheme would not provide sufficient water for 10 years, and that it was better to have Pupuke Lake as reserve to a city water supply. Councillors j>ointed out that water under the Wairau scheme would cost 1/3 per thousand gallons, whereas the city water was offered at 1/, in addition to which the rates on the land encircling the lake might be gained, though there was, of course, the cost of constructing a ring sewer around the lake and the building of a large reservoir on the North Shore. The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, put forward a motion that the council's delegates be advised to advocate the use of city water and oppose the Wairau scheme at the water supply conference. Mr. T. M. Rollo seconded the motion. An,amendment to add to the motion the words "provided the cost of the city water scheme does not really exceed the cost of any alternate scheme," was defeated. The motion was then carried without opposition.
