j The first round of the Auckland ladies' i winter golf championship at Akarana this : morning provided a surprise in the defeat ' of Mrs. G. F. Ferguson, recent winner of j the Rotorua open championship, by Mrs. jG. J. Piekthall. Both are members oi | the Auckland Golf Club, and there is a, j difference of strokes in their handicaps in Mrs. Ferguson's favour. Two visitor* in Miss J. Stewart (Whangarei) and Miss K. Nutt (Christchurch > were drawn against one another, and Miss Stewart won comfortably after providing sound golf—4l for the first nine.
