MRS. PICKTHALL BEATS MRS, FERGUSON.
j The first round of the Auckland ladies' i winter golf championship at Akarana this : morning provided a surprise in the defeat ' of Mrs. G. F. Ferguson, recent winner of j the Rotorua open championship, by Mrs. jG. J. Piekthall. Both are members oi | the Auckland Golf Club, and there is a, j difference of strokes in their handicaps in Mrs. Ferguson's favour. In her defeat 'she had to contend with an opponent who | was playing better than her handicap, I for Mrs. J'ickthall's approximate medal ! round was 83. off a 13 mark —the net result being four better than the scratch [score. Mrs. Piekthall matched her more I experienced opponent through the TairI ways, and was the better around and on | the greens. The margin of 6 and 5 I
would not have been so jrre.it had Mis. Ferguson not missed the shortest of putts. Playing in the concurrent bogey Mrs. Piekthall was 2 up when the match ended at the thirteenth and finished all square, which was the best card of the mornins. Very sound poll" was played by Mrs. J. M. Alison (Titirangi I. champion of champions last season, and she cave Mrs. Grevatt very few chances with a round of 80—40 out and 40 home. Her bogey card from a 7 handicap was I down. Two visitor* in Miss J. Stewart (Whangarei) and Miss K. Nutt (Christchurch > were drawn against one another, and Miss Stewart won comfortably after providing sound golf—4l for the first nine.
