HUGE DEFENCE PLAN.
AUSTRALIA'S EFFORTS. DOMINION CO OPERATION. Australia's immense scheme to bring about a great all-round increase in the defence efficiency of the Commonwealth
is likely to be further expanded, according to Sir Charles Marr. a former Federal Minister of Defence and a sitting member of the Commonwealth Parliament, who arrived in the Niagara from Sydney last night.
The total expenditure involved w:is now estimated at £70.000.000, dp said, find tlie limit had not yet been reached. Included in the plans were huge works to build fighting aeroplanes and aircraft for commercial purposes, and manufacturing plants for the making of puns. ammunition and other defence requirements.
To ensure that the necessary personnel would be available for all needs, a bill was at present before Parliament to provide for a compulsory national register. There was also a body of opinion in favour of taking a register of wealth, to enable the Government to determine the amount, variety and distribution of the financial and other resources. Australia, and New Zealand should maintain the closest liaison under the present conditions, said Sir Charles. Their common problems in the Pacific made co-operation essential, and this co-operation should include trade.
