PREPARING FOR WAIPA.
(By Telegrapti.—rjwo Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, this day. The going was fairly heavy on the Ao. 1 grass, which was available for fast work at Te Awamutu on Saturday. Owing to their charges having raced over the previous week-end several trainers were content to restrict their horses to pace work, which was done on tiie inside grass.
British Nation (Lewis) was the first to work and covered three furlongs in pleasing style in 38m. Ova Kin« ((.'. (t. (ioiilsl)ioj was loafintf at tiie end of his five furlongs done in 1.4. the first three in 37 l-ss. This member of J. Meftae's team bears a very bright appearance. Besiege (('. G. Goiilsbio) and Te Monowai (Pratt) were on terms at the conclusion of mix furlongs, the last five taking 1.5. They worked well. Liicidus (Smith) was not extended to run the last mile of a mile and a half in 1.55. He was pulling hard throughout. True Measure (Smith), who still looks a trifle big. was sprinted home from the haif-inile post in 52 l-ss. The following were given pace work: — I'gly Duckling, File de Vaals. Surmise. Sieglinde, Krination, Celtic Lad and Kequiem. The Leighton colt, the Hunting Song- Biddy Comet colt, the Bambury colt, the Beau Pere—Lady Bede colt and the half sister by Beau Pere to Menial were also given pace work. The alterations to the course have not vet been completed, but arrangements are well in hand for the forthcoming meeting. and. provided the weather is fine, an excellent day's racing on (The new track, which has been well banked, should be provided. Among other improvements are a greatly enlarge totalisator house and stewards' stand. "
