SEAMEN ACQUITTED.
SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. (By Telegraph.-—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, Thursday. A Supreme Court jury acquitted Douglas Isbester (21). a seaman, and Michael George Kenneth Cotter (241. a seaman, both of the steamer Kartigi. on charges of attempted unlawful carnal knowledge of girls aged respectively 14 years nine months and 15 years four months, aboard, the steamer at West port on April 9.
Evidence showed that the girls decided to run away from home and hailed the accused, going aboard the vessel at night with them and entering their bunks.
Mr. Justice Xorthcroft. etating the evidence against the accused mainly was a (Statement by one of them denyinsr intention of the alleged offence, pointed out that the "ills" evidence was a doubtful ground on which to ba-se a conviction.
