INCREASE OF RECRUITS.

British Official Wireless. (Received 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 31. The War Office announces that in order to forward the military preparedness of the Army, the numerical strength of which is increasing very rapidly, the Government has decided, with the King's approval, to revive, with certain modifications, the two posts of Inspectors-General of Oversea and Home Forces, which existed before the Great War.

The Inspector-General of Oversea! Forces will be responsible for the inspection of the higher training of regular and territorial field armies, for the inspection of oversea garrisons under the control of the War Office, for consultation by arrangement with the Government of India and the India Office on matters of higher training with the Indian military authorities, for liaison with foreign staffs, and for co-ordination of all training and preparations for the dispatch of an expeditionary force as directed by the Army Council.

The Inspector-General of Home Forces will be responsible for the inspection of militia and regular troops and territorial army units. In addition he will make himself acquainted with the command of home defence schemes and maintain touch with civilian authorities responsible for A.R.P. duties and with regional commissioners.

The King has approved of the following appointments:—lnspector-General of Overseas Forces, General Sir Edmund Ironside; Inspector-General of Home Forces, General Sir Walter Kirke; Adjutant-General to the Forces, Lieuten-ant-General Sir Robert Gordon Finlayson; General Officer Commanding in Chief British troops in Egypt, Majcl - - General H. M Wilson.

As is already announced Lieutenant - General Brownrigg will succeed Sir Walter Kirke as Director-General of the Territorial Army, and Major-General G. J. Giffard will succeed LieutenantGeneral Brownrigg as Military Secretary for War.

Sir Clive Liddell has been appointed Governor of Gibraltar in succession to Sir Edmund Ironside.
