BEEF PRICES FIRM.
VEAL IMPROVES SLIGHTLY.
The demand for beef was keener at tile Westfield fat stock market to-day tad prices showed signs of firming after 1m( week's sharp drop. This was due mainly to a considerably reduction in the number of cattle offered.
A large bench of buyers bid steadily throughout the sale and all prime cattle sold readily, steers realising up to £14 per head, while the best of the cows and heifers made slightly over £9. Auctioneer*" quotations were unchanged, ranging up to 32/ per 1001b for extra choice ox. The best prices of the sale were realised for two drafts of heavy bullocks, one of 24 from L. Larner, Morrinsville. which sold from £12 to £14, and the other, 13 from Messrs. Thompson and Ernest, Whakatane, which made from £8 15/ to £14 per head. A truck of eight prime steere from H. E. Reed, Waerenga, brought up to £13 12/6.
The entry of calves was also smaller than last -week. Prime vealers sold at slightly firmer rates, while plain and unfinished calvee were unchanged.

Our quotations are the same. Extra choice _ox sold to 32/ per 1001b; choice and prime ox, 28/ to 31/; ordinary and plain. 23/ to 27/; prime young cow and heifer beef, 24/ to 277; ordinary cow beef, 17/ to 23/; heavr prime steers, £11 to £12 2/6; lighter prime steers, £9 7/6 to £10 17/6: light prime steers, £8 to £9 5/; small and unfinished steers, £4 10/ to £7 17/6; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers. £8 10/ to £9 2/6; heavy prime cows and heifers, £7 10/ to £8 7/6; lighter prime cows and heifers, £6 7/6 to £7 7/6; light prime cows and heifers, £5 to £6 5/; other killable cows, £3 to £4 17/6. Calves.—Our yarding of calves was again a large one, a. lot of plain calves coming forward. Values were firmer for good quality, while plainer sorts sold at late rates. Runners, £2 10/ to £5 heavy vealers, £4 to £4 15/; medium vealers, £3 to £3 15/; light vealers, £2 5/ to £2 18/; smaller vealers, £1 10/ to £22/; small vealers, 18/ to £1 8/; rough calves, 10/ «to £1; bobby calvee, 5/ to 16/. ALFRED BUCKLAND AND SONS. Calves. —VVe had an average yarding of calves, but good quality prime veders were in short supply. Demand for this class showed a slight improvement, while plain and unfinished calves were firm at late quotations. Light, unfinished runners. £3 to £4 5/; heavy prime runners, £5 to £6 10/; heavy vealers, £3 15/ to £4 14/; medium vealers, £2 16/ to £3 10/; light vealers. £2 2/ to £2 14/: smaller vealers, £1 7/ to £1 18/; small vealers, 16/ to £15/: rough calv«e6, 10/ to 16/; bobby calves, 2/ to 14/.
DALGETY AND COMPANY, LTD. Beef. —Our yarding of beef totalled 199 I head, comprising 08 steers and 131 cows and heifers, against 272 head last week. Ox 'beef sold to a steady demand at values fully firm on last week's rates. Good heavy cows and heifers were in short supply, and values *for this class were firmer, while other cows and lieifei* sold at late rates. Extra choice ox sold to 32/ per lOOtb; choice and prime ox, 29/ to 31/; ordinary and plain, 25/ to 28/; prime young cow and heifer beef, 22/ to 26/; ordinary cow beef, 16/ to 21/. Extra lieavv prime steers ranged in price from £12 10/ to £14: heavy prime steers, £11 5' to £12 5/; lighter prime steers. £10 to £ 11; light prime steers, £9 to £9 17/6; small and unfinished stere, £5 5/ to £8; extra heavy prime young paws and heifers. £8 to £9 2/6; heavy prime cows and heifers, £7 to £7 17/6; lighter prime cowb and heifers, £6 to £6 17/6; light prime cowg and heifers, £5 to £5 15/; other tillable cows, £3 to £4 5/.
