GAMING PROSECUTION.

COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE

Herbert Brierley. aged 42. a hairdresser and tobacconist, of 3f>7. Dominion Road, was charged in the Police Court to-day with using his premises on May 27 as a c<llllllloll framing house. Bricrlcy. for whom Mr. (ieorge Skelton appeared, pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant McHngh said complaint* having been received, the police made inquiries and. obtaining the necessary evidence. Detective-Sergeant F. X. Apliii and Detective Cromwell raided Brierley's shop on Saturday morning. They found the usual type of betting material. Brierley, who frankly admitted the charge, said he had been obliging customers. "I see he was convicted of a similar offence in 1923, again in 1923 and in 1935 for assisting." said the magistrate. Brierley. said Mr. Skelton. was a returned soldier who had been seriously injured during the war and was unable to earn a livelihood by physical work.
