GOODS TRANSPORT.
RAILWAY FREIGHTS.
RATES TO KING COUNTRY.
Fears expressed in Hamilton that the new scale of rates for the transport by rail of general merchandise, which come into operation on Thursday, would not apply to traffic between Auckland and the King Country are unfounded, according to Mr. A. W. Wellsted, commercial manager for the Railway Department. Mr. Wellsted contradicted the Hamilton report that the present rates on this section were to be retained, and said that the new tariff would certainly I operate.
Under the new tariff local rates have been abolished as a general principle and a flat rate, based upon mileage, has been substituted. An Auckland firm •an at present send goods 174 miles to Taumamnui at £3 a ton, while a Hamilton firm must pay £3 5/11 a ton for the 01 miles to the same place. The revised rates will increase the charge against Auckland firms to £3 4/3, aud reduce that to Hamilton firms to £2 10/. The revised rates for small lots, it is anticipated, will also be beneficial to Hamilton fiona.
