BANK DEBITS A GUIDE. SEASONAL DECLINE SHOWN. The latest "Abstract of Statistics" furnishes particulars of the bank debits, or the total amount debited to all accounts (excluding Government) by the trading banks during each week. The average weekly debits during each month are as follow: —
These figures give a fair idea of the volume of business done generally. They i»dicate the quieter state of trade during the winter and early spring, when exports are low and internal trade is quieter, and the greater activity in the summer time and the flush of the export eeasot:. General expansion of trade was indicated in the returns of 193(5, and this trenj was continued throughout 1937, culminating in December of that year with the highest figures recorded for that month. There was a check to the rising trend at the beginning of 1938, and a steady decrease was shown month by month until December, when the figures or December, 1937. were exceeded. These, were followed by a sharp seasonal decline in the Hist few weeks of the new year, and a recovery during February and March.
