STOLE A COAT.
THEFT FROM CAR.
LABOURER IMPRISONED. "Stealing coats from motor cars is very prevalent—the trouble appeals to be motorists leaving the doors of their cars unlocked," said Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.. to-day, when sentencing Felix Mulligan, labourer, aged 48, who was charged with stealing an overcoat valued at £1 10/.
Evidence was given that yesterday in High Street the accused was observed trying the doors of motor cars parked in the street. A pedestrian watched accused and saw him take a coat from a car. Accused was followed into Queen Street and given in charge.
Accused said he had purchased the coat from a man whose name he did not know for a "dollar," an explanation the magistrate did not accept. Accused was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment.
