STREET APPEAL HELD.
CANCER CAMPAIGN FUNDS. Money boxes were rattled in Auckland city and suburbs to-day when the third street collection of the year, to obtain funds for the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society, was held. The collectors were on the job early this morninz to catch city workers coming into their office*, and, judging by the number of people in Queen Street wearing the badges given in receipt of donations, their appeal* met with a good response.
Aucklandere have s reputation for being open-handed when any charity is concerned, and most boxee seemed to be heavily laden by lunch time. The collectors reaped their second rich harvest of the day when city workers came out at the lunch hour, and their emiling faces were evidence of their success— and also, in many instance*, strongincentives for generous giving.
The Auckland branch of the Red Cross Society undertook the organisation of the appeal in the Auckland metropolitan area, and they conducted it in co-opera-tion with other organisations connected with social work. Auckland has been asked to establish and maintain a statistical research department, and to do this the division would require an annual income of £1500. Thi* eum was being sought in the Auckland Province to-day, and, though rather a "tall order," may possibly have been gained.
If not, then it will not, at any rate, be the fault of the collectors.
