DEER DESTRUCTION.
Having set aside 370,000 acres of the Urewera as a national reserve, the Government is now properly concerned to ensure that the bush is not permanently damaged by deer. The deer menace, according to the Minister of Internal Affairs, is "much greater than many people imagine," although in this and other newspapers the menace has been reported many times. The Minister has now decided to station an officer at Ruutahuna, to superintend the official operations for the destruction of deer. It is a decision to be welcomed, especially if it means that the destruction of the pest is to be accelerated. Despite the extensive operations of Government parties, by which the South Island appears to have benefited more than the North, there is still a question whether the campaign is successful i n destroying more than the number of deer naturally bred every year In short, is the Government "getting them under or is it merely "holding its own"?
