The most disastrous lire in Levin for many years occurred in the heart of the business area about midnight last night, causing damage estimated at £4000.
The flic had a good hold when the brigade arrived and it was suppressed only after a two-hour battle.
The outbreak started in premises occupied by Mr. Horton, painter, and owned by Mr. (1. K. Douglas. This shop was completely gutted. The fire spread to the roof of (he adjoining premises, owned and occupied by Kuen Key Leong. fruit and vegetable merchant, the roof being practically burnt out and extensive damage bein'ncaused to stock by fire an<f water. Meanwhile, the roof of the shop on the oilier side, occupied by Mr. \V. Stannard. stationer, had caught alight, but Hie Hames were extinguished immediately. However, stock was damaged ;>y water to the extent of about £MH). Mr. Leong's stock was insured for £»MH) with the Liverpool. London and (.lobe Company, and the shop for £1000 in the Koyal office. Stannards stock was covered to the extent of UloOO with the Victoria Companv.
