A remarkable ense of a woman who masqueraded as a man for 51 years and had two "wives'' was revealed when Annie Payne, aged 64, became an inmate of the Old Men's Home at Lidcombe, a suburb of Sydney, last week. Her sex whs discovered when she was taken to a hat h.
The woman lived under the name of Harniurt Payne. She came to Australia from Derbyshire when she was 13 years old and immediately donned boy's clothes. Ever since she had led the life of a man, being employed variously as labourer, traveller, tram conductor, rate collector and assistant town < lerk. Both her "marriages," she said, had been happy. Her last "wife" died only a few weeks ago.
