FORM AT FORBURY

RIDICULOUSLY SLOW.

PACE IN RITCHIE.

LIGHTNING LADY WINS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) -: DUNBDIN, this day. Fine weather favoured the Forbury Park Trotting Club for tlie opening of it« 4 winter meeting yesterday, and in consequence there was a large attendance and the track was in good order. During the day the sum of £ 18,8:57 10/ was put through the machine, compared with £10,121 for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £2716 10/. Ohudleigh owed his easy win in the Bay field Handicap to the erratic displays of hie opponent*. Co-Director began quickly, but broke soon afterwards. This left t'luidleigh in the lead from a bunch of horses, the most conspicuous of whom were Paddy's Harvest, Traveltone, Allworthy, Hamel Bey and Hatrack. With a round to go Paddy's Harvest and Allworthy threatened to collar Chudleijrh, but on reaching the mile post Paddy's Harvest broke, and those behind him got into a jam. Thia let Chudleigh away with a big lead and he won easily. Hanu-1 Bey wan lucky to avoid his faulting opponents and eeetire second money. Loyal Rey outclassed his sixteen opponents in the Domain Handicap. He made a "very slow beginning, but travelled fast over the concluding four furlonge, and had the race won a iurlong from home. Rowi. Axspear and Marfax were among , the leaders all the way. These three horsee were under a hard drive down the straight, Rowi beating Axspear by a length for second money. Then came Marfax, Seascape and Wraquill. Privateer won the Beach Handicap easily after having a perfect passage for nine furlongs, where he took the lead at his leisure, and although challenged in the straight by Gay Avon and King Potts he never looked to be in danger of defeat. The ridiculously slow pace set for it mile and a half in the Ri' ' Memorial Handicap detracted con* .«*ivly from the interest in the contes.. X»t<e of the pacing candidates wanted to ,'•» to the front, and eight pacere were <-'.ntent to allow Sea Oift to make play, which was to her liking. The result was that the watch read 2.25 for the first mile and 3.33 for the mile and a half. From that stage of the journey the speed was increased. Sea Oift and Horsepower were first in line for home, where Lightning Lady, who had travelled on the outside of two sulkies most of the way. dashed up to the leaders and Noll Grattan also issued a strong challenge. In a stirring finish Lightning Lady won by a length from Nell Grattan with Horsepower cloee up in third place. Then came Mareceres. Ferry Post broke up badly at the start. Pecunia Consistent. Pecunia added to hie list of consistent performances hy conceding a big field of horses upwards of 12 yarde and defeating them easily in the Victory Handicap. The second horse, Regal, was badly placed from the home turn and put up a good effort to finish where he did. Stamboul wae always in the thick of the fight and came home strongly tq secure third money. Coquette wae on the outside of four sulkies going out of the straight the first time and this cost her a lot of ground. She paced fast over the last half-mile and was fourth to cross the line. She should win to-morrow. In a good finish Bittersweet won the St. Clair Handicap by a narrow margin from Blue Logan and Peggotty. The latter made a break half a furlong from home and recovered quickly to secure the minor position. The fourth horse, Royal Romance, got into a pocket in the middle stages of the contest and never got clear until the race was over.. She should be prominent to-morrow. After waiting on the leaders, College Boy and Gay Avon, for a mile and five furlonge, Acuity went to the front in the Renown Handicap and opened up a big gap from her opponents. From there on she was never in danger of defeat. Gay Lady, who was always well placed, came on well in the straight and beat Gay Avon for second. Van Derby began smartly, but made a break when he had travelled a furlong. He got to within five lengths of the leader with a round to go, but he tired over the last furlong and wae fourth to cross the line. Even after making a slow beginning Ferry Poet had too much speed for his opponents in the Flying Handicap, which he won in fine style. Red Pigeon was responsible for most of the pace, but two furlongs and a half from the judge Windsor Lase raced to the front. She led into the straight, with Red Pigeon, Ferry Post, Waipahi and (linger Jack in hot pursuit. A furlong from home Windsor Lass wae beaten, and Ferry Post and Red Pigeon drew out to fight out the finish. Waipahi beat the others for third, with Ginger i Jack fourth. Ferry Post ehould win I again to-morrow.
