BIRKENHEAD OFFER.
SHORT CUT TO TAKAPUNA. The main highway through Northcote from Birkenhead to Takapuna and Devonport is by way of Onewa and Lake Roads. A shorter route, however, is by Pupuke Road, in Birkenhead, leading into Ocean View T?oad at Northcote. The latter road ie only laid down for summer traffic. A deputation from the Birkenhead Borough Council, comprising the Mayor, Mr. E. J. Osborne. and Mr. Albert Hadfield, made representation* to a meeting of the Northcote Borough Council for the improvement of Ocean View Road for all-weather traffic. Mr. Osborne pointed out that this route was used by numerous cars gning to Takapuna and Devonport. The Borough Council was mainly concerned on account of the Birkenhead quarry being located at .Takapuna, and the large amount of cartage involved, four motor trucks being continuously employed. This route would gave half a mile each trip. If metalled, the provision of an all-weather road would be of great benefit to Birkenhead. The Borough Council, therefore, was pro-, pared to allow the Northcote Council | to take from ite quarry at Takapuna, without charge, as much sandstone as was necessary for the purpose, and also rotten scoria for the blinding. The Mayor, Mr. TJ. Martin, said the generoue offer would have sympathetic consideration by the Northcote council when discussing the estimates within the next two or three weeks. The spreading of the material might be done by relief labour, as the council now had a "by-and-large" authority to employ men on footpath formation.
