RAILWAY EXTENSION. ASSISTING PUBLIC SAFETY. NORTH ISLAND PROGRESS, i "Considerable further progress has been made recently in the work of modernising and extending the signal and electrical services of our railways," said the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Railways, to-day. "All work of the kind is undertaken in the interests of public safety an£ the increasingly efficient control of passenger and goods train movements." Some reccnt developments in connection with automatic signalling and traffic control in the Waikato and central part of the North Island were mentioned by the Minister. "Signal installation work on the Stratford-Okahukura line has progressed very Satisfactorily," said Mr. Sullivan, "with the result that automatic signalling will be in operation this month as far as Tangarakau, 51 miles from Stratford, and the system will be completed to Okahukura (90 miles) by July. "New power-signalling of the most modern design, to operate the recently enlarged yard at TTuntly. will lie brought into use in .Tune. In this connection the first change-over lias already been made." The Minister remarked that during the heavy traffic periods of Christmas, New Year and Faster splendid results were obtained from the operation, commenced in December last, of automatic signalling on the double line between Ngaruawahia and Huntly and from the system of electric interlocking at Taupiri,
