JAP. STATEMENT. Bombing Of Foreign Property In Chungking. ENVOY'S SECRETARY HURT. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 5. It is officially stated in Shanghai that several bombs were dropped on the British Consulate compound during a raid on Chungking. Twenty-five Chinese sheltering there were killed and 50 Fires are still raging throughout the city. A Tokyo spokesman regretted the bombing of Consulates in Chungking, but contended that pilots sighted military objectives. A later message says Chungking was again bombed. A Japanese spokesman stated that would no longer assume responsibility for the bombing of foreign property, including Consulates, in unoccupied areas. The British United Press Chungking correspondent says that when the British Consulate was damaged by a bomb yesterday the Ambassador was inside. The Ambassador's secretary, Mr. John Tahourdin, was injured while helping the wounded. Two hundred thousand Chinese .have fled from the city. Air raids on Swatow yesterday, from which most of the population has evacuated, resulted in the deaths of 50 civilians. Raids on villages near Poklo resulted in 350 being killed and thousands made homeless. Three thousand Japanese reinforcements have arrived at Canton, but 100.000 Kwangsi troops are stationed to check the Japanese drive into Kwangsi. The Japanese defeated a second attempt to capture Nancliang. inflictiii™ 6000 casualties since April 30, says a Tokyo message. It is reported? from Liontcng that a large squadron of Chinese cooperating with artillery, wiped out a Japanese division.
