CHINESE REVERSES.
Japs. Resume Initiative Near Canton. CLAIMS OF SUCCESS. (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, April 28. The Chinese claim the complete occupation of Kaoan, says a Chungking dispatch, but the Japanese assert that they prevented the Chinese attempt to recapture Kaifeng, driving them off 28 miles, and also declare that 10,000 Chinese were dispersed at Changyingtsi. The Japanese, aided by reinforcements, have resumed the initiative around Canton, says a message from Hongkong, and are threatening adjacent districts.
FINANCIAL CRISIS. NORTH CHINA'S PLIGHT. (Received 11 a.m.) PEKING, April 28. A serious financial crisis is impending in Xorth China owing to the steady decline of Federal Reserve Bank notes, quoted at over 31 per cent discount. Apparently local Japanese are buying national currency heavily. Retail prices are rising sharply.
