Skin Care Is All Important!

Health 6 Beauty ~ ~~

r£ majority of women have dry skins. Ihe busy lives we lead, almost entirely devoid of exercise, attended by overheated houses, faulty diet, the elements, contribute to the skin's dryness. If wo could only realise that nothing contribute* more to wrinkle* and ageing appearance than the need of softening and protective oils, we would not hexi tate to apply nourishing creams to our complexions, to make up for the deficiency in the supply of oil from the oil gland*. Dry skins need nourishment to provide proper lubrication, and keep the outer •kin soft, and supple. In addition to creams, it needs a mild astringent to stimulate the circulation. See that your diet contains some fat and foods in rich vitamins, such as fruit, milk and vegetables, all of which •re essential to health and beauty. Then there is the oily type of skin. To a faulty diet, disturbances of digestion and improper elimination may he attributed an excessively oily condition. An oily skin majr take a good scrubbing and profit by it. Soap, warm rater and a complexion brush should be i»ed, with a little extra cleansing cream tround the chin and nose where the oil glands are most active, so that the gores will not become clogged. Rinse t»ith clear warm water, then cold and, if necessary, use an astringent lotion. Mask treatments are very beneficial to an oily skin, because they cleanse the pores thoroughly, and also because of the stimulation to eirculatioa. Unless an oily skin is kept scrupulously elean, enlarged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, even acne nay result. They are all symptoms of sluggish functioning of the skin. The pores become clogged with waste, which they fail to discharge. Skin that has large, coarse pores needs refining and stimulating. Poor circulation is a frequent cause of large pore*. Cleanse it with soap and water and a complexion brush. Scrubbing ftrouses the circulation. Rinse with warm water, then cold. Cold water may be sufficient to close the pores. If not, pat on

an astringent lotion with pads of cotton Alcohol and witch-hazel are excellent, astringents. The nose and mouth corners are the popular nreas for blackheads, though it is not tinusual for them to form on the hack of the neck and shoulders. Thorough washing with soap and water and a complexion brush is the first step. If they do not respond to this face scrubbing treatment you may have to open each blemish, in which event it is well

J. to massage a little cold cream. Cut down on the amount of sugars and starches in the diet when pimples appear. Sweets, pastries and rich deserts should he eaten sparingly, if at Acne causcs more heartaches than all other skin troubles. Manv cases are prevented by ridding the skin of blackheads as soon as they appear. The face should be kept thoroughly clean, even though it necessitates washing five or six times a day. The diet should be watched carefully. There should be some outdoor exercise daily, and plenty of rest and sleep. There is a well-known lotion recommended for acne in the early stages. The formula for this lotion is 1 drachm of

potassium sulpliuret, 1 drachm of zinc sulphate, to 4oz distillpd water. Ingredients dissolve separately before mixing. Apply enough of the lotion, so that a thin film of powder is visible on the skin. Also, Exercise! Back up diet with exercise. Walking, tennis, dancing and swimming will keep your figure trim and supple. But whore such recreations are out of the question a little physical culture must be substituted. By the way, swinging is an excellent exercise I would recommend to those of my readers who are worried about their arms. If scraggy, it rounds out, if over-fat, it reduces. Swinging, too,

offers an admirable opportunity for • dispersing second chins. Lift up your head and stnaiprhten your shoulders as you swing back, and do a lot of deep breathing. Deep breathing, it is well known, is the greatest antidote to salt cellars and hollow chests. Eat nothing between meals, but you can drink as much cold water as you can manage to get down. Walk about three brisk miles a day. Leave medicine alone. Vigorous patting of the neck and face, either with the tips of the fingers, or with a little patter, is very good. Patting also helps to smooth out wrinkles, and brings a most becoming if transitory flush to pale clieelcs. Don't forget to use a good cold cream and a good skin food twice daily. And you can use them oftener if you like. There's nothing like cream for an ageing face! Don't forget a good astringent also. A simple one ia made as follows: Half-and-half witch-hazel and rose-water. Once or twice a week you may use it undiluted, and always slap it is. , On the Bath There is nothing like a bath upon retiring to set your mechanism straight for the night. See what kind of bath agrees with you best. Few people can stand a cold plunge even in hot weather, although it is one grand way to cool off. On the other hand, a hot bath, however agreeable, often causes fatigue and wakefulness. Perhaps it is best°to "split the difference." A bath taken at

the temperature of the body, or a trifle •wanner, is not especially allurinjr, but it is safe at all times for everyone. Bathing is a wonderful remedy, too, and the old-time theory is exploded that there is any time when one should not bathe.

Once the muscles have been worked out, the results will soon lie seen in an improved vouthful contour. ♦ ♦ * + JJKXT to the eyes, tlie lips, tell the story eloquently. Curled into a sneer, they can be more effective than the lash of a whip. Flashed into an infectious smile they can brighten the face as sunrise lights up a grey horizon. + + -f- + JUST what is tlie most beautiful thing ever beheld by man or king is a mooted point. For some, it may be a ship in sail or a horse in speed, but often it's a "gamfn" grin, which quivers the upper lip and crinkles the nose of a charming woman.
