HIGHWAY LINK.
£83,000 TRESTLE BRIDGE.
OPENED SOUTH OF FOXTON,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day.
Built at a total cost of £83,000, including road approaches, a concrete trestle" bridge over the Whirokino Swamp, south of Foxton, was opened by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, to-day, the occasion being marked by an official gathering of representatives of local bodies and others. The trestle is the second longest concrete structure of its kind in the Dominion, being composed of ninety spans, each forty feet in length. The longest of this type of bridge is the Rakaia River bridge in Canterbury. The construction of the new trestle provides an all-weather route on the important Wellington-Auckland highway. On numerous occasions in the past, floods have seriously interrupted traffic. Plans are under way for a new bridge over the river at the southern end of the trestle, replacing the old "hump- ; back" bridge.
