CHINESE PUSH ON.
Initiative In New Offensive Maintained. FORCES NEAR CANTON. (Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 14. A Shanghai newspaper savs that although the outcome of the Chinese funeral offensive is not yet assessable, the Chinese clearly maintain the initiative and are apparently about to recapture Canton, towards which thoy are driving after taking Tsensrshmg. ° The Japanese evacuated Slieklrni" aerodrome and aro making desperate efforts to prevent an encirclement. They plunged into a major defensive battle around Fungchung and Kiuvfu, 15 miles north-west of the city. Chinese offensives in the provinces of Niansi, Ifupeh. Honan and Kiangsi continue in the full flood of victory. Casualties since the inception of the'offensive are computed at IiO.OOO Chinese and 45.000 Japanese killed and wounded. Street lighting in Kaifeng. which the Chinese invaded after mopping up the Japanese in the outskirts, resulted in 700 Japanese casualties. Heavy fighting continues in C'hun"--siang and Yangshih. GERMAN WOUNDED. JAPS. SHOOT DOWN 'PLANE. (Received 2.Z0 p.m.) LONDON, April 14. Three Japanese war 'planes shot down near Laokas a Junkers passenger 'plane belonging to the Sino-(ierman Eurasia Company. A German pilot was wounded., but no passengers were hurt.
