LOCAL BODIES.

PAPAKURA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Mayor. Mr. S. Evans, presided over the usual fortnightly meeting of the Papakura Borough Council.

Councillor's Bereavement.—The Mayor expressed the sympathy of the council with a member, Mr. A. Burgess, in the death of his brother, who was killed at Westficld.

Employment Found. —The Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, advised the council that employment for Mr. A. C. Foster had been found in the Stamp Duties Office, Auckland, and added it was noted that he had given excellent services over a considerable period. Mr. Foster was formerly employment officer at Papakura. His services were terminated with the advent of the social security legislation.

Relief of Distress.—A cheque for £7, part of recent art union funds, was forwarded by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry. It will be sent on to the Papakura Social Welfare League for the relief of distress.

Street Collections.—An application to hold a street collection on October 27 in Papakura, received from the St. John Ambulance Association, was granted. The Community Sunshine Association aluo received permission to hold a street collection on June 30, and a donation of £1 1/ was made to the funds'.

Anti-gas Instruction. —A recommendation that the councillors and staff and the members of the fire brigade should undergo a course of anti-ga? instruction, under the direction of Mr. S. H. Godden. who. as the council's nominee, recently underwent training »t Narrow Xeek, was adopted.

Stock Route.—With a view to keeping stock off the' Great South Road between the sale yards and the station, the clerk was authorised to investigate the possibilities of a new route for stock, making a direct crossins from South Street over the Great South Road and through the cemetery reserve, between the croquet lawn and the cemetery-, on to Onslow Road, and thence to the station.

Footpath Scheme.—A comprehensive footpath .scheme was authorised, to cost about £250. It will include sealed footpaths on the western side of Railway Street West, Broadway (northern side). Chapel Street. Opalieke Road. Elliott Street. Averill Street. Great South Road from Youngs Road to Oak Lodge, and Coles Crescent. A footway in Trentham Road was also authorised.

Finances Buoyant.—The Mayor reported that a debit balance of £509 at March 31. 15)38, had now been reduced by £300. and that an improvement to the extent of £700 had been effected in the others. All other accounts were in credit, with the exception of the Soldiers' Memorial account of £21 11/.
