CATHEDRAL CROWDED.
Thousands Pay Tribute To Late Prime Minister.
CEREMONY IN MELBOURNE. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Dame Enid Lyons, widow of the late Prime Minister, arrived by 'plane from Sydney yesterday, but was not well enough to attend the Requiem Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, which was attended by her three elder children. Sir Earle Page, acting-Prime Minister, and some members of the Federal Cabinet, the Loader of the Federal Opposition, Mr. J. Cuitin, and the former Governor-General, Sir Isaac Isaacs, were also present. The cathedral was crowded with 5000 yesterday morning, and thousands stood in the drizzling rain outside while Mass was proceeding. Melbourne has rarelv seen a ceremony of such moving solemnity as this Requiem Mass. Archbishop Maniiix was the celebrant, and a panegyric was preached by the Administrator of the Cathedral, the Very Rev. Dr. Lyons, who said, in conclusion, "The Prime Minister was called to his reward on the day the Divine Master carried His cross and died on it. "This great crowd has gathered here to pay tribute and offer their gratitude to one who will lie remembered among the great ones of this younji Australia." The late Mr. Lyons* funeral will take place at Devonport, Tasmania, to-day. Dame Enid is expected to leave for Tasmania by 'plane to-day. and memlters of the Cabinet at present in Melbourne will fly to Devonport this morning.
