WEST END WINS.
EASTER BOWLS FINAL. TEAM-WORK SUPERIOR.* BUCKLE'S VALIANT FIGHT. Although the final of the Auckland Bowling Centre's Kaster fours terminated at Carlton green on the nineteenth head yesterday, with the score 2o —12, that was no fault of the losing skip, R. Buckle, of Hillsboro. He did all that man could do against a superior attack, for W. Bremner's West End team showed a high degree of skill and never was the value of team work better demonstrated. Many a time all that was required of Bremner was to play safe, as liis three comrades (F. J. Newell, A. H. Stichbury and Noel Donaldson) often had left an impregnable position before the skips took the mat. Buckle, on the other hand, was forced, through lack of combination on the part of F. Eagles, X). .Drake and K. Dormer, into many a hopeless position. He did not, and could not, always play himself out of trouble, but he exhibited a true captain's courage when things went so consistently against him. Two instances of the perversity of fate; as far as Buckle was concerned, were supplied on the first and third ends. In the former, in attempting to draw the shot, he promoted an opposing bowl for two, and on the latter occasion Bremner found himself the scorer after lie had endeavoured to burn the head. Buckle played two. splendid bowls on the seventh head, but the West End skip was equal to the task. ,With the score then 9 —2 Bremner's men were working in such perfect harmony that defeat was out of the question, especially as it was apparent Dormer was not maintaining ihis earlier form in the tournament. A remarkable shot by Donaldson on the eighth head eventually produced three points for West End, and although Buckle drew a couple of "■beauties" on the ninth Donaldson again attacked strongly in the tenth, after which the board read: 24 4_ Eagles got a toucher with his first ball on the eleventh head, and ultimately -it was the only scorer. With the marker calling 16—6 Buckle was compelled to drive into the fourteenth head. For once the luck was with him, for when a survey was made of the scattered bowls he was lying two up instead of several down. There was laughter as Donaldson, instead of his usual custom of directing the skip, called out, "You had better come down and have a look for yourself." Bremner accepted the invitation, and- after a careful scrutiny wisely decided not to risk making the position any worse. This made the score 16 —8. Threes against them on the fifteenth and sixteenth spelt disaster for the Hillsboro quartet. A superlative draw (a toucher) by Donaldson looked like letting West End in again, but Buckle cut him out and moved the jack back for a couple, 22—10. Then the fickle jade administered a knock-out blow to the Hillsboro skip. Forced to drive on the eighteenth Buckle's first bowl miraculously went through without disturbing anything, and his next knocked kitty into the ditch. The head, however, was alive, and already lying two Bremner drew another to make the tally 25—10. Dormer had no more success than his skip when he went for a drive on the nineteenth head, for after trailing the jack, it rolled out of bounds with a couple of. Hillsboro counters just inside! On -the replay Dormer had his reward, for he promoted one of his side's bowls and drew the second shot with his final bowl. So, at 25 —12, the skips called on their men to shake hands without "prolonging' the agony" for the other couple of heads. INTER-CLUB GAMES. SATURDAY'S ' ENGAGEMENTS.
