Rpiilvinn' to recent criticism by e 'ames County Council of the Public "nrks Department's action in retaining ♦.» draglines at work on the Thames erodrome when in the opinion of the M.mifil it should be engaged on dramr"e work in the district, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, states in a letter to Mr. J. Tliorn, M.P., that the dragline was first brought to the district for the purpose of raising and strengthening the stopbank round the Thames aerodrome, which had been damaged by- floods. Before starting that work it was diverted to urgent work in the Bonds Road area, which was completed in November last. Since returning to the aerodrome it had been engaged loading materials on lorries in order to expedite the surfacing of the runways. This _ would be completed by the end of April. The dragline would then he used on Hudson's stopbank, Bonds Road, the Matatoki Stream diversion, the Waralioe Stream, the straightening of Wainui drain and road. At present it was impossible to provide another piachine in the district.
