BOOKIES ON HILL.

ELLERSLIE OFFENCE.

YOUTH CAUGHT YESTERDAY.

FINE OF £20 IMPOSED.

Making a voluntary appearance before Mr. J. Morling, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, a youth of 19, Thomas Duggan, who was yesterday caught taking bets on the hill at Ellerslie, pleaded guilty to the resultant charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker.

Detective-Sergeant McHugh said complaints had been received by the racing authorities that bookmakers were operating on the hill at Ellerslie. A constable was sent there yesterday and made several half-crown bets with Duggan, the constable succeeding in drawing a couple of dividends. When approached by Detective-Sergeant Aplin, Duggan admitted that he had been taking bets. "At nearly every race meeting at Ellerslie bookmakers who operate there are caught and fined, yet the offences continue," added Mr. McHugh. "These men are a source of trouble there. Duggan is working and receives £2 10/ per week. He was betting on a limit of £10 for a win and £3 for a place. He admits betting at Ellerslie on one previous occasion."

Duggan, who had nothing at all to say, was fined £20. He was allowed one month in which to pay the fine.
