RISE IN AUSTRALIAN*.

BROKEN HILLS ADVANCE.

(By Telegraph.— Spe.ial to "Star. if )

CHRISTCHURCH, thie day

A sharp rise in some of the more popular Australian industrials was a feature of the morning call cm the Christchiirch Stock Exchange to-day. The volume of business was fair, more than 500 shares changing hands. Buyers of British Tobaccos raised their otters 6d to 50/, but were still 6d below sellers' limits. Offers for Broken Hills were raised from 58/6 to 60/, and for the contributing remained firm at 51/, with sellers at 33/. Electrolytic Zincs also showed a sharp advance on yesterday's closing quotation, and buyers offered 47/0 for the ordinaries without response, while for the preference offers were raised 1/3 to 51/3. G. J. Coles also showed a (inner tendency. They closed yesterday with 78/(i offered, and buyers to-day were offering 80/6 with sellers at'Bl/6. Chain stores .shared in the advance. Woolworths (Sydney) being wanted at 23/1. Xew Zealand Breweries, however, were weaker.

Broken Hill Souths sold at a better price, and there was a slight advance in Grey Rivers. Mount Lyells were unchanged at 27/. Bidding was very free throughout the call, and transactions from Auckland and Wellington show that the Christchiirch market was a long way ahead of that in other Xew Zealand. Tt is thought that this stronger showing among Australian industrial*! is the expression of persistent rumours at present current regarding possible currency changes as a result of the Easter conference of the Labour party.
